So, you've been staring up at your ceilings, maybe thinking it's time for a facelift. Or perhaps you just wrapped up a big renovation and now need some fresh "lids" overhead. Good for you! Tackling ceiling drywall isn't something you want to rush into. It's a pretty big project, and doing it right means you'll end up with a smooth, beautiful finish that actually lasts.
I've seen my share of ceiling jobs here in Spokane, let me tell you. We've worked on older homes in the South Hill and those shiny new builds out by Liberty Lake. Every single one has its own quirks, but the planning steps? Those are pretty much the same everywhere. Here's what you should really think about before you even pick up the phone to get a quote.
What's the Timeline Look Like?
Let's talk about how long this whole thing actually takes. It's not just about the day we hang the drywall sheets, you know? There are several stages involved, and each one needs its own time to cure and dry properly. You just can't rush good work, especially when it comes to drywall.
Initial Chat & Quote: This usually takes anywhere from a few days to a week. It really depends on how busy contractors are at the moment. We'll come out, take some measurements, chat about your options, and then give you a solid price.
Material Delivery: Once you've decided to move forward, we'll order everything: the drywall sheets, mud, tape, screws. This can sometimes take a few days, especially if we need specific boards like moisture-resistant ones or those thicker fire-rated sheets.
Installation (Hanging): For a typical room, say about 12x15 feet, hanging the sheets might take a day or two. Bigger spaces, or if you're doing multiple rooms, will obviously take longer. Ceilings are tough work — gravity definitely isn't your friend up there — so it's slower than doing walls.
Taping & Mudding (First Coat): This is where the real skill comes in. The first coat of mud goes over all the seams and screw holes. It has to be precise. Then, you need to give it a good 24 hours to dry completely. If it's humid, like during our spring rains, it might even take a bit longer.
Second Coat & Sanding: Another coat goes on, and we carefully feather out the edges. After another full day of drying, it's time for the first round of sanding. Heads up: this creates a ton of dust, so be ready for that.
